Guitar Wheels Donated To International Guitar Education Program

GAMA Program Trains Approximately 300 School Guitar Teachers This Summer

Music Master Publishing, creators of the Guitar Wheel, donated nearly 300 wheels to teachers being trained at GAMA’s Teaching Guitar Workshops program this summer. The Guitar Wheel is a hands-on educational music theory tool that many teachers incorporate into their instruction, and students find guitar and music theory more tangible through the colorful and graphically intricate design of the Guitar Wheel.

Through the Teaching Guitar Workshops, GAMA helps educators to start or enhance their guitar music programs. Music Master Publishing is honored to support GAMA with member Farley’s Musical Essentials in this effort to help educators promote to their students the understanding and enjoyment of music both in theory and in practice. GAMA’s workshops have brought guitar instruction to hundreds of thousands of children throughout the Unites States and Canada.

Glen McCarthy, Chair of MENC Guitar Education Team and Teaching Guitar Workshops, said, “The Guitar Wheel is an excellent product that helps guitar students understand music theory. It is a great addition for the teachers that attend our workshops." Music Master Publishing looks forward to more ways to support GAMA in the future.

Donated Guitar Wheels Will Help Guitar Educators Teach Students

Tom Amoriello Is The Guitar Teacher’s Guitar Teacher

Music Master Publishing, creators of the Guitar Wheel, has donated over 100 wheels to music educator Tom Amoriello to be used in his classes, workshops, and clinics. The Guitar Wheel is an educational music theory tool that is making its way into the hands of teachers and their classrooms nationwide, thanks to Amoriello. MMP promotes the understanding and enjoyment of music both in theory and in practice, a vision that aligns with classical guitarist and proud Guitar Wheel endorser Tom Amoriello’s to bring guitar theory and instruction into the classroom.

Amoriello has been a public school music teacher in New Jersey for six years, and began a guitar program in his school in 2005, which was later implemented district wide. Numerous schools now have guitar programs because of Amoriello’s innovative efforts.

"The makers of the Guitar Wheel actually care about the well rounded education of every guitarist. The Guitar Wheel is a great educational tool for meeting the diverse needs of today’s students, in private, and public school music instruction,” said Tom Amoriello.

Amoriello is an avid clinician and guest speaker at conferences in the United States. Educators attending his workshops on “incorporating the guitar into your school music program” receive free Guitar Wheels to try out in their own classrooms. For classroom instruction in music theory, the Guitar Wheel is a handy supplemental aid to any teacher’s curriculum. For visual and kinesthetic learners especially, the Guitar Wheel helps students grasp complex theory with this hands-on, colorful and graphically intricate learning aid.

You may have heard Amoriello speak in April 2011 at recent conference workshops at the MENC Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore, MA, or at the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society Festival in Philadelphia, PA.

You can hear Amoriello speak in his upcoming presentations:
Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 10 a.m., where he will present a lecture on music education. The Guitar Foundation of America Convention and Competition in Columbus, GA will be held June 28–July 3, 2011. For more information visit www.guitarfoundation.org/drupal/convention.

August 22, 2011, at the New York State School Music Association Summer Music Conference in Albany, NY, which will be held August 21–August 23, 2011. Visit http://nyssma.org/ for more information.

“We enjoy supporting Tom because he gives himself wholly to educating others. He has a big heart and is a highly effective teacher, not to mention a master of guitar. Anyone attending his workshops will leave feeling inspired and equipped to start a guitar program,” said Dustin Cheatham, CEO of Music Master Publishing.

MMP is actively searching for opportunities to support underserved schools by sharing their vision to grow strong music education and guitar programs. The Making of the Guitar Wheel: The Story of Creator, Dennis Cheatham

Ever wonder just how the Guitar Wheel came to be? For Dennis Cheatham, whose invention this truly unique music theory tool is, the original concept was clear from the very beginning. From conception to completion, the Guitar Wheel had literally been under construction for 15 years prior to its 2005 debut at NAMM.

Dennis, ambitious to learn music theory to improve his own guitar playing, wanted to create a working tool to help musicians grasp theory and chord construction. He accomplished this by putting the information directly on a curved version of a guitar neck. Simple, right? Not really. The intricate parts and pieces of the Guitar Wheel were originally cut, pieced, pasted, and colored by hand. Revision after revision required constant structural and cosmetic changes to the Wheel. It was the ongoing art project that took over the family dining table, and eventually the extra bedroom, and even grew to have its own set of art supplies. With no deadlines and before the though occurred to mass produce and market the Wheel, Dennis would work on it for a while and put it away, then work on it again whenever inspiration struck.

What began for Dennis as a hobby became a passion and ultimately a business. His passion helped develop a product that is marketable and useful to more people than just himself. Dennis' family was very encouraging, as they had watched the project evolve through all its phases and realized its potential as a product that defied the current standards of boring chord books, charts, and the extremely basic and limited circle of fifths. The Guitar Wheel contains a library of music theory in one eye-catching, easy-to-use tool.

Together, the family moved forward with Dennis' growing dream of making the Guitar Wheel into a reality, and Music Master Publishing was born to market the Guitar Wheel to the world. After securing copyright, trademark, and sufficient working capital, the Guitar Wheel went to print for the first time in 2004. In January 2005, the Guitar Wheel had its own booth at the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA, where it launched to the more than 60,000 people in attendance that year. Dennis and wife Nancy, along with their three children, Dustin (current president and CEO), Dana, and Dale, worked the booth to support the new family business and help demonstrate the Guitar Wheel. Initial public reception of the Guitar Wheel was fantastic, and business has steadily grown over the last five years. The Guitar Wheel is now in its third printing and is sold to distributors worldwide.

The Cheatham family is proud of Dennis, his vision, and the success of the Guitar Wheel. They are extremely grateful for the support of all the friends, professionals, and artist endorsers who have helped the business grow. Dennis remains humble and thankful to God and to his family for their unwavering support. Ever creative, Dennis is authoring a book to complement the Guitar Wheel, and has entertained ideas for other educational music theory related products. We think it’s an excuse to buy more art supplies!
